Princess Margaret Hospital

Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH), a major acute cluster hospital in the Kowloon West Cluster, has been awarded Hanson Grand Award (Hospital). Despite the increasing difficulties made by the rising demand of medical services and energy consumption, it cannot dissipate the proactiveness and determination of PMH to implement energy saving measures.

In recent years, the hospital has adopted multiple energy saving technologies including the oil-free chillers which are more energy efficient than the traditional chillers. Also, a photovoltaic power system was installed at the rooftop of Oncology Building, which eliminates 17 tons of carbon dioxide emission per year. Under the framework of 4Ts Charter, the hospital has set its energy saving target and is going to implement 27 Energy Management Opportunities (EMO) Projects including the replacement of constant speed chillers by VSD type chillers, replacement of T5 and T8 fluorescent lamps by LED tube lamps etc.

To engage more staffs to work together to achieve the target, the Green Ambassador Scheme has been introduced such that at least one colleague is nominated as Green Ambassador in each department to promote green activities and habits. Furthermore, energy saving labels have been distributed to all departments to promote the energy saving behaviors.

The hospital pays attention to the transparency on tracking energy saving result, energy consumption and progress of green activities; thus, such items are regularly reported in Hospital Management Executive Committee, Green Management Committee etc. to review environmental performance of the hospital. From top management to frontline staffs, PMH has been pulling out all the stops to conserve energy and protect environment.
