It is a project of utilizing a cloud-based big data analytic software platform for the central chiller plant optimization at Two International Finance Centre (2IFC). In 2019, an initial minimum energy saving target was set to be 5% annually for this project. By the end of 2022, the total energy saved was over 12% annually. It was equivalent to approximately 1,200,000 kWh of electricity saving and 850 tons of CO2 reduction. The chilled water system including two major plants which namely the seawater cooling plant and the central chiller plant with major equipment installed such as seawater pumps, chilled water pumps, and direct seawater-cooled chillers. To support MTR’s green initiatives, the objectives of this project were set to reduce carbon and greenhouse gas emission through enhancing the system energy efficiency of the central chiller plant. Also, this project was aimed to operate the chiller plant smartly through the utilization of a cloud-based AI solution.
Equipment and system operating data were collected from different sensors and field devices like ultrasonic temperature and water flow transducers, and energy meters. Data were transmitted from the existing Building Management System (BMS) and Energy Management System (EMS) to the data logger for continuous data monitoring and data analysis. The collected data were analyzed, and actionable insights were generated automatically by the software platform. These actionable insights were then reviewed among the MTR’s Technical and Property Management Teams together with the AI Solution Project Consultant and system maintenance service contractors before being implemented as Energy Saving Opportunities (ESOs). These ESOs were implemented for optimizing the central chiller plant operation. Finally, the energy saving results were evaluated and compared with the historical system operation data and over 12% of annual energy saving was achieved.
