In this invention, we developed aqueous Al-ion batteries as an affordable, safe, and reliable energy storage solution for a carbon-free future. The motivation behind this project is to support the government's plan to enforce carbon neutrality by optimizing the grid and encouraging the development of electric vehicles, which require reliable and safe batteries. Aqueous Al-ion batteries utilize a water-based electrolyte instead of toxic and flammable organic chemicals used in traditional batteries. Low-cost and abundant materials like Al metal and graphite cathode are used to keep the technology affordable. Compared to commercial Li-ion batteries, aqueous Al-ion batteries are safer and more sustainable. Moreover, the battery shows excellent capacity and almost double the energy density of current Li-ion batteries, with minimal performance degradation even after 1000 cycles. Prototypes have been developed to power personal electronic devices such as LEDs, fans, and mobile phones, but the ultimate goal is to apply this patented technology on a large scale and help create a decarbonized energy future. Although there are still challenges in further performance optimization and integration of the battery technology, aqueous Al-ion batteries show promising potential to drive the development of electric vehicles and renewable energies in the future. By providing an affordable, safe, and high-performing energy storage solution, this project offers a significant step towards achieving carbon neutrality.
